As we move out of high school the age difference between us and our friends becomes less of a social issue (we don't care what society thinks). However, be aware that most friendships, even in adulthood, are between people of similar ages.
As I look back, it seems that most of my close friends were right around my age. However, I have to tell you, some of my closest friends (and I am talking about nice people I could either talk to or recreate with) were younger than me. Chronologically, we were not the same age but in many respects, we were the same age spiritually and intellectually.
In one sense, you perhaps have to question the motives of a person who wants to be our friend but is not close to our age (like the age difference you have described). But on the other hand, we also have to be careful of outsiders (family members and even other friends) dictating to us who our friends can be -- especially as we grow into mature adults, there is a point where we have to decide ourselves who we will associate with in life. Should we deny ourselves a friend who is fun to be with, emotionally supportive and interesting just because he or she is older or younger than us? I think not. If I denied myself friendships based on age, my life would not have been enriched by the some of the nicest men and women I have ever known.

not really a huge gap to be friends, but I wouldn't exactly say close friends. a 17 yr old really has a long way to go for understanding things older people go through. Unless that 17 yr old is very mature, I think it is only ok to remain good friends. not friends who spend endless time together. At least not until the 17 yr old is legal.

Nothing wrong with age differences between friends, as long as the loder friend isn't trying to influence the younger one to do abd try things he's not ready for.
