It is difficult to give a conclusive answer to this question, since little is known about the early kings of India. Mythology has stories of great kings, but it is difficult to consider these as historical evidence.

Chandragupta Maurya, who was Emperor Ashoka's grandfather, was one of the earliest famous kings about whom we have enough information. He is a contemporary of the Greek warrior Alexander, and is famous for having defeated Alexander's general Seleucus. He died three centuries before Christ.

India was first ruled by a king named Bharata. The name Bharath came to India by him only. In ancient times India was known as Bharatavarsham. Ashoka was a great king but not the first ruler of India. Alexander the great was a king who wanted to conquer the whole world. But unfortunately, he died when travelling through India.

there was no one king of India in the ancient era. India was divided into various small regions so its very difficult to say who was the first king as simultaneously there were many kings. but do read this whole article from the site, u will get more details.:

Mahajanapadas (महाजनपद) literally means "Great kingdoms" (from Sanskrit Maha = great, Janapada = foothold of tribe = country). Ancient Buddhist texts like Anguttara Nikaya (I. p 213; IV. pp 252, 256, 261) make frequent reference to sixteen great kingdoms and republics (Solas Mahajanapadas) which had evolved and flourished in the northern/north-western parts of the Indian sub-continent prior to the rise of Buddhism in India.
