it could possible some simple things. first check or have check'd the shift linkage cable to see if it has broken. if that is ok have a computer check done to see if the transmission control module is showing any error codes. as this is a computer controlled transmission. if it show's error's then have them troubleshooted. possibilities are that the solenoids are burnt up, valvebody hanging up or actual clutch pack failure. hope it helps some.

Well if it is a manual tranny, you need a new clutch.
If it is an automatic, then I would suspect the transmission vacuum modulator, usually on the rear right top side of the tranny. This would only be part of the problem. Then also you may be low on transmission oil. If you ran it for some time and then it is possible to burn gears.
For a cheap fix , change the auto tranny fluid first and see what happens. Then if that does not work you need a new tranny. But being only 5 years old, my bet is low on oil or no oil. Either way, change it.

First have you checked the transmission fluid? If the fluid is full it means than the transmission in your car will need either rebuilt or replaced with a quality remanufactured one.A local transmission shop can rebuild the one that is in your car now but its not cheap and usually with only a 12 mo or 12,000 mile warr. The other option is to replace it with a quality remanufactured transmission like a Jasper. It comes with a 3 yr or 75.,000 parts and labor warr.It will be alittle higher than a local rebuild but it is alot better quality

Check the transmission fluid level. Make sure you locate the dipstick then start the vehicle and pull the stick out. Clean the stick off with a paper towel or rag. Then fully re-insert the stick pull it out again and this should indicate the true fluid level in your transmission. Turn off the vehicle and add the appropriate amount of fluid to the transmission.

FIRST CHECK THE TRANNY FLUID. IF THAT IS OK CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE SHIFT CABLE DIDNT BREAK. IF THESE
ARE FINE THAN THE TRANNY SHOULD BE CHECKED AT A TRANNY SHOP.
