A few years ago I bought a used 1987 Volvo 740 GLE from a former boss of mine. I paid only $500 for it but still regret it. After a month it started having trouble starting and eventually wouldn't start at all. I brought it into my usual shop and they said it was the fuel pump. They put the fuel pump in, the car ran with weird problems for a month, and then it stopped starting again. I took it into another shop recommended by a friend of mine and they said it was another fuel pump that went bad. Evidentally, it had 2 fuel pumps, one in the engine and one in the tank. They installed a new one and it ran well for a few more months til it just quit on me on my way to work. I gave up on it and got rid of it.

Two things come to mind: the black smoke indicates a rich run condition. The need for starting fluid indicates a lean run condition. If it has a MAF sensor, it may well be the problem. The "backyard" test for the MAF sensor is to "rap" it sharply with a screwdriver handle while at idle: if the engine changes RPM AT ALL the MAF sensor is bad. This sensor is in the rubber hose running from the air cleaner to the engine: it will have a wiring connector attached to it.

It could also be a bad temperature sensor, but this would only make it run rich, not both rich and lean.

Hope this helps. more on my website: http://econofix.com/computer.html

Haynes Manual
What you do is get the Haynes Repair Manual for your Year and model of vehicle at Auto Zone, or another automotive repair shop. The manual will show you what and how to do the repairs.
