Do you need a DVD burner to back up your hard drive or can it be a cd burner?

You can use CDs, but you're gonna need ALOT of them!

They only hold 700mb

It depends upon how much data is on the drive!

A CD cannot hold a GB of data! DVD can not hold 10GB of data!

For a drive you should purchase Drive Imaging software. Otherwise, you copy only the files/data that you want to back-up.

To place Active@ KillDisk Pro onto a floppy disk type the following at the command prompt:
COPY G:\KILLDISK.EXE A:
COPY G:\DOS4GW.EXE A:
The above assumes that the G:\ drive is the bootable CD-ROM drive and the A:\ drive is the floppy disk drive.
DOS4GW.EXE is a required file for Active@ KillDisk, Active@ UNERASER and Active@ Disk Image.

It depends on how much information you have to back up. CD burners can only burn CDs and their capacity is not very big. DVD on the other hand has a much larger capacity so it'll backup more of your hard drive at once.

DVD burners can play and burn DVDs, VCDs and CDs
CD burners can only place and burn VCDs and CDs

CD ok just need more than dvd. could depend on the program but majority if not all allow cd.

In fact neither both. An external hard disk drive of about 320GB shud suffice - it's dependent on what you have in your hard drive- whether u are just backingup your computer's running systems and how big it is .
