Even if they got rid of some young talent to get some complementry vetrans, why can't they ever be competitve? Even outside of the AL East, they could and should be somewhat respectible.

It's the David verses Goliath syndrome. The Rays play in St. Pete a thousand miles from no where in that ballpark. It's takes forever to get there. They have to deal with the fact that the Yankees and Red Sox are in the same division. Not to mention a vastly improved Blue Jays ball club. The only team they can truly compete against is the O's.

I've heard rumors that they might move the franchise closer to Orlando. It's a much better market and would be more accessible to a larger fan base.

the D-rays play in a division with two of the highest payrill teams in the league. They do not draw the attendance or the TV revnue (cue the Yanks/Mets who have thier own channel) to put this type of team on the field. When thier good young players get too good, they demand more money. The team out of need or not wanting to spend, must now trade that player. The teams don't have cohesiveness, therefore cannot really compete. Example. Carlos Beltran was a Royal 3-4 years ago. When he bacame the all star player they could not afford to keep him, thus they lose out on a MVP type player.

Every single year, Tampa Bay is becoming more of a threat than ever. Sure they have young talent, and it's good to see some standouts carry the team. The thing is that they don't have a lot of fan support. They need more support from fans to get going. They need to keep their heads in for the prize too. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't be surprise if they go to the top in a few seasons...

Payroll is determined by tickets sales, TV contracts, and overall revenue earned. Tampa Bay is a small market team which means they are below the league average in those areas. The only way to win without a big payroll is good young pitching ie. A's and Twins, something they don't have.

As a proud fan of the Devil Rays and probably the only one ha-ha the best answer I can give you is that We are trying to look towards the future. We have a brand new young owner, president, General Manager and Manager. We hope to put together a roster full of talented younger players with the hopes that they will excel as they gain major league experience.

They're in a bad situation because of the division. You saw what happened when the Orioles mounted a threat in early 2005...

They're essentially waiting for the Yankees and Red Sox to slump, as they try to store young talent. The Blue Jays have resorted to spending money to compete as well, so they'll need to wait until the monopoly falls.

Because the ownership is too stingy! They will NOT spend that extra money to get a key player missing in their roster.

For example, this offseason they should have gotten a proven closer and another good starting pitcher. Instead they're going to open the season with McClung as the closer and a rotation that includes Fossom and Seo!

They have no leadership. Even the veterans who are there have been there their whole career so they expect to lose. They need to go out and get a proven winner to play everyday to lead this team.
