i am going into a rock jam, ( sort of like a talent show , but music only.) and i have approximately 8 hours to work with my band, and we are not doing anything really crazy. But my question is this, should we do a cover song or use something from the lyrics i have already written. Ironically I am the only one in the band that can't sing,(I’m the drummer) but i write all the lyrics, strange but functional.

As far as this particular instance goes, stick with the cover. I am all about originality in music, but to write, rehearse, and learn an new song and be able to KILL IT, you are going to need more than 8 hours (at least to make something worthy). I do not know what kind of music you play (rock now a-days is a pretty broad term) but people always love it when you take a song from a different genre and ROCK IT OUT!!! My band used to play Madonna's "Like a Prayer" but in an almost punk style. Look at other bands that have had success with this (2 come to mind, Alien Ant Farm "Smooth Criminal" and Dynamite Hack "Boys in the Hood") and I personally think this would be the way to go given the circumstances.

How many songs are you allowed? If it's 1 only , i'd go with a cool cover , otherwise you have to write the original song , then have everyone learn / rehearse it , and you only have 8 hrs, that's enough time (hopefully) to get 1 good cover down.

if your competing i would def say DO A COVER.

original you never know how people are going to react to it, and you'll feel less confident becuase its your own work out there and thats always scary!

plus people get into the music if it a song they like and it will give you a better chance in the competition..

no man...don't use your own lyrics for your cover song.....
it's musical suicide.....
but u can change the arrangement of your cover song though....
make it inot something that is uniqely yours.....
you can do that by brainstorming.....
i've played a lot of shows and trust me it works....
