The rivalry start before the trade of the "BABE". Prior to the Trade Boston was the top team in the east. They won I think it was 6 Series in the early 1900's. Then the trade came, from that point on the New York Yankees became the successful and powerful sporting franchise of all professional sports. Between 1923 and 2000 they Won 26 World Series and 39 AL Championships. All after they acquired the "BABE". During that stretch Boston won "0" World Series and than a handful AL crowns. I do not even know why they call it a rivalry. For it to be a true rivalry shouldn't both teams had success? It is my opinion has been total domination by the Yankees. Boston is just bitter and constantly whining that they can not compete with New York. They had a great run in 2004 and my hats off to them, but 2005 could just be the start of another 86 year drought.

I really think that it is just because babe ruth and the Red Sox fans are jealous bc the Yanks can win. The Real baseball rivalry is the Cubs and Cardinals, the Cardinals were created to be a rival of the Cubs and the Cubs WS misfortunes along with all of the trades in favor of the Cardinals. Cardinals 10 WS Cubs 2 WS. Go Cards!

Yes, it's a rivalry, at least to Red Sox fans. It may have started in 1919 when Henry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees. Then nothing until 1949 when the Red Sox led the Yankees by one game with two to go. The Yankees won the AL Pennant. Then nothing until 1978 when the Yankees beat the Red Sox in a one game playoff off of an unlikely home run by slap hitting short stop Bucky F. Bent. In 1986, not the Yankees, but New York in the World Series when the Red Sox lost a 3-2 lead in the World Series. Then in 1998 and 1999, the Yankees tore up the AL, with the one bright spot being Pedro's stunning pitching in the ALCS in 1999. The Yankees went back on their way until 2003 when the Red Sox and Yankees had a pitched 7 game ALCS, including a brawl in game 3 featuring Pedro Martinez vs. Don Zimmer on the top card. That great series ended miserably with Pedro in too long in game 7 and Aaron F. Boone hitting a walk off home run to lead off the 12th. Then the next year, the brawl that started between Varitek and A-Rod in July to spark the Red Sox's turnaround. The torrid Red Sox finish. The Yankees 3-0 lead in the ALCS, including the 19-8 spanking in game 3. Then with in the bottom of the 9th of game 4, with the Yankees leading by a run and the greatest closer in post-season history on the mound, Millar walked, then Roberts ran for him and even though everyone knew what was about to happen, he stole second, then Yankee killer Bill Mueller singled to center for the tie. Two innings later Big Papi on a drive to deep right and it was 3-1. Then next night in the 10th Big Papi drove in Damon for the winning run and it's 3-2 and back to NY. In game 6, Bellhorn's 3 run home run was almost wrongly treated as a double, then with the score 4-2 and Jeter on second, A-Rod slapped the ball out of Arroyo's mit (Arroyo hitting A-Rod had started the fight back in July), but was called out for interference. Game 7 was not even close thanks to Damon's home runs. In 2005 the Yankees and Red Sox went down to the last game of the season for the AL East or the Wild Card. Finally the Yankees took 12 of 19 in 2006 to dash the Red Sox playoff hopes. Sounds like a rivalry to me. But then, you're a Yankee fan.
