Okay, some say "it is because it is unhealthy for you", but so is all the candy and junk food Americans eat every day. Others say "non-smokers shouldn't have to be in smoky restaurants, etc" - fair enough, but there are a LOT of smoke-free restaurants they can go to. Smokers don't ask that all restaurants allow smoking simply because they smoke. Why do some non-smokers feel it should be ALL their way, when others can compromise and sit in non-smoking or got to smoke free places. What is next? A HoHo and Doughnut ban? Obesity and the heart and health problems it causes are a leading cause of healthcare costs rising and death. Does the government need to protect us from ourselves? Our state is considering a ban on smoking everywhere except in your own home. Doesn't this seem extreme?

Okay, I get it that some don't want to smell smoke and take in second-hand smoke. I understand your point. However, why aren't some willing to compromise and have some businesses smoke-free and others allow smoke? Why all one way?

i am a smoker and I think it should be up to the establishments owners to make that decision. I think I should be able to walk down the street or be in a park and smoke, anywhere outside is ok. And I can understand the second hand smoke thing, just go where their is no smoking.

The government does what it wants, always has always will. Keep in mind that everything that is illegal now, was once perfectly legal. Check your history. Anyone with money could go to a drugstore and by heroin, methamphetamine, etc. Could also get it mail order, all perfectly legal. In fact heroin was once used by doctors to treat alcoholism. The whole banning smoking crusade has nothing to do with health, it has to do with money and the expansion of government power. If the public allows it with little serious reaction, then the government will just continue to exert more control over our lives. They always keep taking until the public pushes back. Read the news, one example is New York's proposal for mandatory blood tests for all diabetics to see if they are following their diet. Hard to believe I know. Look it up. George Orwell had the right idea, but couldn't foresee just how far the government would go. Just wait and see. If the public doesn't wake up soon and push back hard, all our few remaining freedoms will vanish. If you watch the politicians speak, note the irony of " making the world safe for democracy" and "giving freedom to the people of (fill in name of current hot spot)" all while taking away the freedoms of Americans. Goodnight and God help us all.

I totally agree. The Government wants to ban smoking but it will never happen. They know because of went happened with prohibition. I personally think the government has no right to ban
cigarettes personally I think that anything that grows naturally should not be banned.

I think they should ban smoking in public, just like they give you a ticket if you don't wear a seat belt and you don't seat belt your children. second hand smoke is worse for others and you, the smoker are forcing your horrible habit on people who don't smoke and you affect people with asthma or heart conditions, it is a health hazard and it is known to cause cancer, if we are too stupid to stop doing something that is known to kill us well someone should tell us to stop.

No it doesnt. Second hand smoke is dangerous - especially for the elderly or children. I wont even let anyone smoke in my home. If you wish to kill yourself, find a way that doesnt take others with you.

It's because non smokers shouldn't have to smell that **** when other people smoke around them. Some people die from second hand smoke.
