The girls are believed to be dumb, and therefore do not usually go to school past a few years. Plus, it's too expensive for them and their families. The boys are given more respect and the family is willing to pay more for a boy to go to school rather than a girl.
Education in America is (mostly) free, but required. All children in America HAVE to go to some school or be home-schooled until they are 16 or graduate.

I've always admired Oprah Winfrey and think her leadership academy for girls in South Africa is great. I do think she should open one up here in America as well. I don't think girls in South Africa have the same advantages as boys, and there are social programs for boys and girls here in America. But I still think Oprah's Leadership Academy for Girls in S. Africa is a wonderful thing.

I think it’s a good idea. Girls in impoverished nations deserve to be educated and do more for their country. I think it’s wonderful in Africa… these young children will get a great education and hopefully, come back to better their country. While I’m not usually a fan of Oprah, I do think this is something of worth that she has done.

Can't fix everyones problems...but over there in Africa if a girl doesn't get a good education her only option is getting a husband to financially support her. Obviously the guys can get jobs as laborers even without an education.

I think anyone can always find something to criticize about someones Else's decision to help someone or some people. I believe what Oprah is trying to do is wonderful. She is educating girls in a country that girls were never educated before. This will defiantly help the country in years to come. What a contribution to South Africa!!

i imagine it truly is large! sure, obviously she's struggling with poverty by technique of helping handfuls of girls in Africa develop into leaders who can flow again to their communities and make a distinction there. we've tried giving food to the ravenous in Africa and it truly is continuously stolen by technique of the governments or rebels of a few form. perhaps Oprah is coming up leaders on the continent so that you'll finally help themselves.

It's a great idea and a beautiful school. Boys are already educated in S. Africa. Children in America have free education, these girls do not. If not for her school there would be no more school for them.

I don't have any problems with creating a girls-only school in a developing country. There are plenty of worthy causes in the world, and you can't do everything. I am a bit concerned that she appears to be taking these girls out of their communities though.

well, the kids in america don't appreciate an education as much as those kids do. most of them don't care. and about the boys, well boys get better opportunities than girls because of sexism. it exists here in america too.

She probably feels good about what she did, and its her money to do what she wants with. I hope someone else builds a school for boys there and they have a chance for a better life.
