Go to a reputable acting school. Get an acting coach. Act in some local plays or musicals. When you have done a few shows - put together a resume/CV. The you will need to get something called "HeadShots" which are pictures of your face and the industry standard is that they should be 8 inches by 10 inches (Also know as "8x10's" or "headshots.") You usually staple your resume to the back of your headshots. On your resume you should have your name, all the phone numbers you can be reached at, your age range (usually give a 10 year range, for example, if you are 25, you would say your range is 25-35 if you can pull off looking like you are in your 30's. Otherwise, put down 25-30). You should also put down your dress size and shoe size, your height and weight - I know this sounds like personal information, but casting directors need this information in order to cast you for certain roles. For example, if they need a woman who is 5'2 and you are 5'10 - you are too tall for the role. So make sure you include all that information on your resume along with all of your training, and your experience. The format for experience goes like this:
Name of Production Role that you played Director/Group
"Annie" "Julie" "ATP Players"
"Law & Order" "Amy" "**** Wolf"
Above - I did 1 theatre credit and 1 TV credit. Usually you separate your theatre credits and your TV/Movie credits. It's ok if you don't have anything but theatre credits when you start off. Casting Directors respect theatre actors.
Next, after you have all that done, you have to make about 50-100 copies of your headshots and resumes. It will take you about 1/2 a day to staple your resume and headshots together, but adminstrative work comes with the acting business. Then, after you've done that, you mail your headshots and resumes out to casting directors. I recommend including a cover letter introducing yourself, emphasising your strengths and who you studied with. Here in the USA you can get a list of casting directors from a book called "The Ross Reports". I'm not sure what a similar book in other countries is called, but I'm sure your acting coach can tell you that.
Next thing you will want to do, is get a few "monologues" prepared for auditions. You will also want to practice something called a "cold-reading" - which is where they hand you a script with no time (or very little time) to prepare and at the audition there will be someone called a 'reader' who will read the other person's lines, while you "cold read" for the role/part you are auditioning for. If they like what they see, they MAY ask for you to do a monologue. However, monologues are usually for theatre only. When preparing a monologue - you will want to have several in your repetoir so you have something close to the role you are going for. Have a few dramatic pieces and a few comic pieces prepared. Make sure you keep them between 2-4 minutes long.
After that - start checking out acting trade papers for auditions if you don't have an agent. In the USA we have a publication called "Backstage" which posts auditions for film, TV, theatre, and student productions. Again, your acting coach can tell you of similar publications where you are.
The next thing to consider are the Acting Unions in the country you want to work in. In the USA we have: AEA (Actor's Equity) which is for theatre, Broadway mostly. SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) which is for TV and Film, AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) which is everything from newscasters, weathermen, to soap operas. In Canada the actor's untion there is called ACTRA and in England it is "British Equity". Once you get into these unions, they you will make better money then when you were non-union, but they also have very strict rules about what kind of work you can accept. For example: SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) has a global rule that once you are a member you are not allowed to take any work on any project that is not registered with SAG - anywhere in the world.
Hope that helps you out and good luck, or "break a leg" as we say in theatre.
