Friendships lasts forever(almost). When you cross the line of friendship(by dating the friend), sometimes it doesn't last long.Then you(may) feel weird about dating your best friend, which could end a good relationship that you once had. So, the best thing to do is to have a bestfriend, unstead of a girlfriend (which may turn into an ex) that you may never talk to again.

You should have a friendship with someone forever if h/she the right one. Or else, you should never have built that friendship at the first place if you know s/he can't make it out??
