Your question could be interpreted in a number of different ways. I assume you are referring to the national government in particular, although the election process is essentially the same for all the various layers of government utilized across our 50 states.

My opportunities to seek an elected office are on a par w your opportunities, or just about any other citizen in good standing (no felony conviction) within the given jurisdiction.

From personal experience I know there is nothing particularly elite about city or county government elected offices. Mostly hard work, low pay, long hours , tough choices , & civic minded zealots watching & judging every move you make.

National elected officials have become somewhat elitist as we the people have allowed them to assume an office based upon rhetoric & appearance without actually calling out those who fail to follow thru w campaign pledges.

When citizens think of those "scoundrels" in Congress for instance , the inference is they are all a bunch of liars & crooks...except of course MY congressperson....as most people don't hold the same belief about their own rep, just those "others"

We reelect the same tired people despite years of the same old tired ideas w the same old non results. We elect someone based upon looks & style rather than substance & reality.

The end result is a group of officeholders who have become nearly invincible , & are often unchallenged by newcomers who don't have the money or name recognition to mount a credible fight....thereby they have been made ELITE.....
