I am from Canada, and here one would need a Bahcelor's degree to get into a teachers college program, and then when they complete it - about a 1 yr program - they receive a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). I am curious to know what the equivalent degree is called in USA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

In repsonse to the first 2 answers, you can major in education during your undergrad here asl well ( i think), but is there a post-bachelor program in the USA that trains those who have a bachelor of arts without a major in education?

In the USA you major in education while you are getting your bachelors. You end up with a BA or BS in education.

I am a teacher in CA and have no degree in education. My BA is in the subject matter I teach, and after my year teacher's program, I recieved no college degree, rather just a certificate from the state stating that I can teach. Elementary teachers in CA get a four-year degree in Liberal Arts and then the same year without a degree at the end, but just a certification. If teachers continue their education, a MA in education (or their subject matter) bumps them up in the pay scale.

~Every~ state has it's own requirements. In CA, you must first have a bachelor's degree and do a 5th year (coursework and student teaching) for a teaching certificate, especially if you intend to go into secondary education because you must first be a content specialist; however, other states have less rigorous requirements and award teaching certificates with a b.s. or b.a. degree in education.

If you already have a teaching certificate and you transfer from one state to another, the state to where you transfer will consider your previous university coursework and inform you of any classes you must take to fulfill their own state requirements (usually pertaining to reading instruction, technology or health).
