I'm sure it depends of type of car, so lets use a Mazda3 as an example...though the basic concept/principal is more important.

It depends on the gearing of the vehicle, its aerodynamic efficiency, and a lot of other factors regarding how well the engine burns fuel. Road cars are generally designed to be most efficient around 40-50 mph. Above that wind resistance drives fuel economy down quickly.

General rule of thumb: 2 X the speed takes 8 X the gas.

Each engine manufacturer should have the specs but they may be just fiction to sell the buyer. The best test method would be to run the car on a fixed quantity of fuel at varying speeds to determine which speed gives the most distance.

At a guess, the Mazda3 will probably do best around 60 mph, 100 km/h

A 4 cyl with a 5 speed would benefit best from an engine speed of
anout 2300-2500 rpms, this usually equates to about 60-70mph.
(depending on the gearing of the trans and tire circumference)

I'm don't know about the masda3 but there is a car that gets 113 miles to the gallon and the top speed is 205mph i don't know the name of the vehical.

Whatever speed it is set to be efficient at. Often they will be around 65 MPH since that is the speed limit on a great number of highways.
