I've never understood it either. Bigots are idiots. I hate, loathe and despise homophobia, racism and any other form of bigotry.

When in a public school, the students and staff need to realize that there are going to be people of diiferent color, religion, backgrounds, beliefs, and sexual orienatation. we constintly have assemblies that talk about ending discrimination and harrassment in the school, "because it's a public school where everyone is treated as an individual" however, those speaches are directed toward people of color and the disabled. They never stop and try to end the discrimination against gays and lesbians.
seriously! i get this a lot too. I've been dating the same person for years. Everysince my sophmore year( 3 yrs ago) I've been having people call me a fag in the hallway, threaten me, and even follow me home. after a year, the students started to accept us more, they saw the types of things that we go through (because we started a GSA and i did a lot of project presentations on the gay issues.) i get a lot of students who come up to us now and tell us that they look up to us and ask us questions, like how they can come out or what they can do to stop homophobia in the school. But the bad thing about it is that now its the teachers who are giving us crap about it. I even had to drop out of my spanish class because the teacher would constitnly harrass me and say homophobic things in class. ike ther was a guy who was flirting with this girl, he told the student to do his work, then he smiled and said, "well at least it's with her and not with him (he points at the guy sitting next to him and everyone laughs) cause then we'd have to have a person talk" there was a day when i went to school sick and i was slacking in my work, he cam over to me and was like, "you think youre special? you think you should be better than the rest of us. just because you're different?" he didn't say the word gay or lesbian, but he spoke in a way so that i knew he was talking about my sexual orienatation. the principle and councilors dont do anything either. all they do is say "well, dont make it obvious and people will leave you alone." we dont do anything drastic, all we do is hold hands and they scream "no PDA." But there are straight couples everywhere, practically having sex in the hallways and they just walk right past them.

Every political affiliation has a set of doctrines. If you are a communist, you do not believe in individual freedoms; and if you do believe in individual freedoms you could not call yourself a communist. A communist by definition doesn't believe in freedom. If you believe that the pope is God's representative on earth, you are a catholic, and you cannot call yourself a catholic if you do not believe that the pope is God's representative because that is what being a catholic is. If you are a Nazi, you will be anti-gay. Homophobia is a Nazi doctrine and therefore homophobes are Nazis because they do not believe in the diversity of humankind. Any homophobe who calls himself "America" has no concept of what being American is. Your friend is being persecuted because of the beliefs of her Nazi friends. They may seem like nice people ordinarily, but then their true evil is revealed when they are encountered with gays, like an innocent looking person who suddenly turns into a werewolf when the moon comes out.

People don't have to hate. They choose to hate, and the reasons are too many to count. Kids invariably pick on anyone different, and if they are encouraged in their thinking by the prejudices of their parents, and of society in general, they can be much crueler than they ordinarily would be. In my opinion, most adolescents have bi-sexual or homosexual thoughts, but if they are influenced by their parents and society, they will suppress them, deny them, and express revulsion at the idea so that others will not suspect them. Eventually, they incorporate these behaviors into their normal thinking patterns, and homophobia is born.

I wish I had a clear-cut answer to this question myself. Working in the field I do, it's hard being gay because there are so many biases and stereotypes out there. Most of it comes from ignorance and unwillingness to think and question one's own motivations. Sadly, you can't make other people change, but you can set an example and try to teach them.

They're frightened of themselves.
In an actual study, 10 gay men were sat down in a room and shown seperate clips of homoerotic pornography. The clips really had little to no effect on the men, sexually.
For the same study, 10 men who self-proclaimed themselves to be homophobic were sat down and shown the same exact clips as the gay men. Every single one of them has a sexual reaction to the clips.
What does that say for homophobia? They're all gay. =]

If you took away all the folks that are different in one way or another who would folks have to hate or sling insults at? No one. We are all different and that is really wonderful.
The folks that sling insults at your friend have not gotten to know her as you have and if they took the time to do so they just might agree with you-but..... They haven't!
As a Redcross volunteer I have reached out my hand many many times to help folks and if they knew about my life style they just might not grasp my hand even though it was to save their life.
Just ignore those folks for they know not what they do.

If anyone had the answer to that one, they'd win the Nobel Peace Prize....people hate whatever is different from them, it's always been that way and unfortunately it probably always will be, especially as long as you've got people teaching their children to hate just as they were taught.

It is easier to say that another person is wrong than to say that you are right. It is easy to talk against another person by using stereotypes for the purpose to make oneself look better, but it is more difficult to give a good reason that one person is better than another person.
