Personally, I like the ones without applicators best, they're easier to figure out. You have to be fairly familiar with your neither regions, as it's all about angles. You have to spread your labia, that's the outer walls of your vagina, the thick skin on either side, and slide the tampon up your vagina. Sometimes, you have to push down a little bit to miss the inner labia, you really just need to feel around and figure your body out.
As for why it hurts, the tampons may be too big for your vagina, or as I'm guessing, you're a virgin, and they're stretching your hymen.
That's perfectly normal, but if it's really uncomfortable you may just want to wait until you loose your virginity to use tampons. Some women just can't do it until that point. In theory, once you stretch it enough you'll be able to wear tampons whenever you want, but you run the risk of breaking that, and some people want to keep theirs intact for their first sexual experiance.
Stick to smaller tampons, I reccomend regular sized O.B. tampons, which come without applicators, and good luck. If it freaks you out, don't stress. Pads work just as well, and you don't want to force your body or yourself to do things you don't want to. Also, tampons do carry a higher infection risk, so you need to be careful to keep your hands clean, and to make sure you change them every couple of hours.

Usually i would put the applicator (because tampons with applicators- specifically plastic applicators, win) as far in as possible while still being able to ..you know. applicate the tampon. That is almost a guarantee that it will be far enough in. If it is in enough- then you wont be able to feel it right near the opening of your vagina and there wont be any discomfort. I usually test out the discomfort by sitting down afterwards and if i cant feel it then im set.
If it hurts- it is either not far in enough or it might be too big to be comfortable.

There should be no pain if you follow the directions exactly from the box. Remember to insert it all the way in. If there is pain, you didn't put it in far enough. You should not be feeling it much at all.
However, sometimes it will hurt if you use it during too light a flow. It just means you are a little dry.
If there is pain for other reasons and you are sexually active, see a gyn.

theres directions in the box... basically theres two seperate plastic or cardboard pieces to a tampon.. hold it in the center on the peice thats outside.. and insert the tampon until your fingers where u r holding the tampon reach your skin.. then u push in the other piece of plastic or cardboard and when both peices are alined.. u take them out. if it hurts when its in then its probably not in all the way..

Not an expert but if it hurts...maybe a smaller size with less absorbancy...also when I was younger...i had trouble with them too try this... Stand up and bend way over when you insert... it seems weird but it works...now that I am almost forty gotta tell you to be careful with them...they cause cramping to be worse and I do not know why...if you don't feel right when using them remember it's ok not to ...I still use them for swimming and stuff but not for everyday they made me feel worse...cramps ya know? goodluck

if you insert it correctly it wont hurt
you are best to use a applicator as these are easier and less mucky squat on the toilet or lift one leg seperate your private parts an push the aplicator with your index finger it is very easy once you get the hang of it

Make sure to get the small ones. If it hurts, it is probably not in all the way. You really shouldn't be able to feel it. Get the Pearl or OB's. They expand around as opposed to getting longer. All others are uncomfortable for me. Good luck.
