You won't be comfortable around people until you can truly say

I DONT CARE WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT ME.

Don't try to deal with big groups straight away. Give yourself a goal of meeting one new person and once you're comfortable with him/her, add another and another. When you have to deal with big social groups think positively about it. Half of the battle is anticipation, once you're in the situation or the night is over, it hardly seems like such a big deal. Finally, be yourself. If you don't know who that is try on some personalities, hobbies, interest until you find one that fits. Once you do, you'll attract social situations in which you are at ease.
