After downloading a large bitorrent file ive learned that fat32 can only handle single files of up to 4gb.For my big hardrive size this really stinks. I've heard there is a way to convert from fat but is this easy and safe? if not will buying an external hardrive solve my problem? Advice much appreciated!

This command which you're in need is called convert.exe. Run it from the command line

Start menu ->Run-> enter cmd.

Then a command console will appear
Enter: convert.exe (driveletter w/ colon) /fs:ntfs

You can convert quite safely to ntfs from fat 32. It will allow well over 4gb and your files should be okay. Or you can create a partition if you have the room say 10 gb and just convert that to ntfs, then point your large download to that partition.
You will only have problems if you try to convert ntfs back to fat or fat 32.

As others have suggested you will need the NTFS filing system. This will increase the file size limit to be around 16,000 GB, (according to Wikipedia). An external hard drive will only help to solve your problem if you format it to the NTFS system.

Go onto the Internet, Type NTFS in the search engine. You will get the command to use to convert your hard drive to NTFS without losing data.
