I've been to Medieval Times, and it is out in the suburbs northwest of the city. The show is actually pretty fun. Officially, it's called, "The Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament."
The idea of the show is that you are at a competition of knights who will square off against each other in a number of contests including throwing a spear at a target and jousting. Both are done on horseback -- real horses with real people riding on them. It is all indoors in a huge "castle."
As you enter you are assigned a color, which tells you where you'll sit and which knight you'll cheer for. In the joust, the knights ride at each other carrying long lances intended to knock the other rider from his horse. The action is very exciting, and often the lances splinter and break into pieces. After one knight has been unsaddled the other rides back to try to defeat him. Usually they both end up on the ground swinging swords or other weapons at each other.
Only one battle is a fight to the death, but this is all acting, like in a play, so no one is killed. Even the injuries are just for show although I wouldn't be surprised if some of the actors do get hurt at times.
There is a plot of sorts, involving a king and his princess daughter and an evil knight of course. I don't know how much of the action is fully choreographed, but I'm pretty sure the actors all know beforehand who the eventual winner will be. They must change winners for every show so the audience never knows if their knight will be victorious or not.
While the competition is going on, everyone is served food, Medieval style, with no knives, forks or spoons. I think you have a choice between turkey or chicken. You also get a bowl of soup and a pewter mug to drink your soda out of. It's all good entertainment.
If you're interested and you can afford the tickets and the time, it's a great way for the family to spend an afternoon. We took my son and a few of his firends for his ninth birthday, and he loved it. For an extra fee they will have the king (I think) announce your child's birthday. As always, there are plenty of ways to spend money while you're there.

You are probably thinking of Medevil Times. I think that it is actually in Schaumburg - a suburb of Chicago.
There is alot to do in and around Chicago.

yea Ive been to Chicago.
In fact almost every day since i live there.
Its a great city.
And the battles your talking about. I think your refering to the ones around Cabrini Green. And yes they do kill each other. But they dont go to waste since we get to eat them afterwards.
