Rafael Sabatini.I love his books Scaramouche and Bardeleys the magnificent. The first one is about a man who is very cynical and yet succumbs to the same idealism that he despises. The second book is about a character who holds himself to be very sophisticated and cynical.Yet he is not even close. Both books are available as free ebooks in gutenberg.org.
Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini. When his best friend, a young clergyman, is killed in a mockery of a duel by an arrogant noble, just to quiet his eloquent expressions of democratic ideals, Andre-Louis Moreau vows revenge. From that point, through meteoric careers as a consummate actor and scenario writer, then as a fencing master, and finally a politician, the brilliant Moreau keeps thwarting the aims of the aristocratic Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr. However, the nobleman causes pain to Moreau as well, and the time must come when the two will meet to settle their enmity once and for all. You are not likely to guess how their confrontation finally turns out. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, this swashbuckling novel is exciting throughout, and it presents one of the most dashing heroes in fiction, a man who can fight equally well with his mind, his mouth, his pen, and his sword, a man who stirs up events wherever he goes.

The nineteenth-century French writer George Sand. Her (yes, HER) novel, _Indiana_, is a fascinating tale. When you get to the end, you HAVE to start over. Somehow, she has figured out a way to write two books at the same time. The book literally has two different endings. It's very bizarre but it's also satisfying. I've never read anything quite like it. The book is available in English. It's beautifully written.
Another fantastic French author is Rachilde. Her novel, _The Juggler_ isn't as good as _Indiana_, but it's still better than any New York Times Bestsellers crap that is produced (yes, produced, not written) today.

Karin Lowachee: She won numerous awards for her debut Warchild, which is probably the best SF written in the past twenty years. The two sequels are also great. They prove that SF can be literary, thought-provoking, and character driven. Her style's amazing, story-telling powerful, and characters more than just memorable, they're also gritty and realistic.
Philip K. Dick: He's definitely one of the most prolific, influential SF authors of all time, but he's more than that. He's also a great philosopher and his work contains great insight into religion, society, and humanity. He always questioned the nature of man and reality, but he did it in an unconventional genre and thus his work is relegated to the shelves of SF instead of literature, where it belongs. He's recognized as a prominent American author in the UK, but inside his own country, few people have read or understand his work. It's a real shame.

My two favorite authors are:
1. Sarah Dessen - she writes realistic fiction novels
2. Jodi Picoult - after I read My Sister's Keeper I was hooked...that might be the best book I ever read and I would definitely recommend it to ANYONE who has a sister

Percival Everett. He's written a lot of books, the critics have liked him, but he hasn't really taken off. His book Erasure is really good.
