I would say its a natural act, and one that is practiced by all species right from when they are babies.

it is a natural act that some people UN learn. a baby will always try to hold on . when the baby grows he will stop if not encouraged to hug.

hi,
in my opinion, it is a learned behavior for humans. some people not raised with much affection (hugs) often remain the same into adulthood. they don't give hugs and have a bit of a time accepting hugs. i have seen this first hand.

I don't know for sure but I feel like you'd have to feel or see a hug to know what it meant. Just like I think you'd have to feel or see real love to know how to give it.
