I'm 1/2 white and really don't have a need for a month of celebration, maybe a day, like European Ancestry Month, but we already have Octoberfest.

I think black people went so long without getting recognition for so many accomplishments...and white man has received credit and recognition for so many things since the beginning of time. The white supremacists began slavery and oppressed/repressed the black people for so long that I think they deserve a Black History month in February. It doesn't offend me. I hear so many fellow white people complaining when February rolls around, stating that black people feel "special" and stating that white people should start a white history month. But whites have had their day in the sun for quite a while. I don't mind sharing the limelight...why should white people care if there's a black history month ? The black people were made to feel "separate" by the white supremacists long ago...and now that they do "separate" themselves in this way, now the white people want to complain about it. It's ridiculous to me. I say live and let live...

well considering whites came from many parts of Europe and since most of America's and Canada's history has its origins in the emmigrant movement, it wouldn't be feasible simply because one will not be able to cover the entire month. And White history 2 months would be a little stale.....Thank goodness for the various ethnic days like St. Patrick's day for the Irish and Jean Baptist Day for the French and I'm sure other communities have their day as well.

because Abraham Lincoln ("the large Emancipator") and George Washington Carver were both born in February. the completed theory of the month became to hit upon Black historic previous because it became typically skipped over in colleges. Now, in 2009, we only use it as an excuse to cram all of it into one month quite than incorporating it into the usual curriculum. P.S.- no longer each month has 31 days. Will 3 more suitable truly make a distinction? EDIT: I meant Frederick Douglas, no longer George Washington Carver.

A lot of these type of questions seem to pop up all over this site. The majority of the country is white, majority of tv caters to white ppl, the majority of advertisements represent white people, the majority of holidays were created by white people. No one is trying to segregate themselves by having a month dedicated to black history because if you took the time to understand black history month, its not only about black people. Its for people to stand behind the black community and help them grow, so they can become more independent and so on. Plenty of white people are acknowledged during black history month besides that, its a great time for kids to learn something more about history. When was the last time you sat in a social studies class and learned something about black history that had nothing to do with slavery?

No I will be happy when we abolish black history month, there is no white and black history but American history. Do I care what color the guy that invented peanut butter was? No. Am I glad he did? Yes. Do I care what color the Tuskegee Airmen were? No, am I glad they did there job? Yes. So why hear about it only in February, I was taught about them in school long before black history month was even enacted.
The only people that care about race anymore is the blacks, keeping this crap alive.
EDIT
Just to let you know what kids are being taught about black history month, my son brought home a work sheet about Denzel Washington and Tiger Woods for black history month. Not GW Carver, Thurgood Marshall or Harriet Tubman and he goes to a predominately black school with a black teacher. Way to go guys.

I just don't like special treatment for a race or sex. I don't give a rat's rump what their past history was. We should be learning about all and any histories that were important to our GROUP....not to a little minority group.
It's called "racism" when you dwell on one aspect. So, either racism is right or wrong....pick one, and shut up.

I suspect most whites would be happy if everyone else would quit getting their panties in a wad over every little thing and quit screaming "RACISM" every time we turn around.
