The alledged perpetrator was the son of an influential family who were successful in suppressing the news of this murder from the media and he was never charged with the crime and remains free today. i am looking for coroboration of this event. I do not seek a witness only someone who knows of the incident.

I tried running this event a few weeks back for you... since you now say it never was mentioned in the media, that would explain why.
With no coverage, the best route would be if you know the name of the victim and the date. She should appear in social security death index. Using the date, you have a chance of finding an obituary, or maybe finding personal friends.
For obvious reasons... if this is something that had huge emotional impact on her family... I would use extreme caution and tact in approaching persons.
