My mom always complains that we spend so much money on the electricity bill and our heater bill. How much do you pay?

My Electric is on average about $180 per month and my heat cost me $520 every 2.5 months. My mom used to always say the same thing. I never really payed any attention to it. Then when I got out on my own and had to pay for that stuff myself I quickly understood why. Now that I have a family of my own I am repeating those things to my wife and kids. In addition to turning off lights and keeping doors closed. There are several things you can do to cut down energy costs. Those energy saving bulbs run on only 1/3 of a regular light bulb. Blanket around your hot water heater is a must. That is approx 22% of your electric bill. If you don't have a programmable thermostat, you might want to consider getting one. They save hundreds a year on heating costs. You can program them to keep the heat to a minimal setting when everyone is sleeping or no one is home. At minimum you should check the thermostats you have to make sure they are working properly. Simply put a thermometer next to it. Adjust the heat to the desired temp if the thermometer reads more than 3 degrees off it is time to check it or chuck it. If it is reading the same temp as the one on the thermostat it is acceptable.Wash laundry with cold water, Use a clothesline when possible. Rooms that are not used should be closed so you don't have to heat them. Those little adapter plug things like for your cell phone charger and ipod. Those consume electricity from just being plugged in to the wall. If they are not being used for their intended purpose then unplug them. The average home spends about $12 a month for those just sitting in the outlet wasting coal. If you don't have these things in your house you can tell your mom she is just as guilty as everyone else. Good Luck.

During the winter, our electric bill is usually low; around the $50-$60 range. However, our gas bill is pretty crazy. It went up to $350 just in January due to the snow we got for three days. Thank goodness the snow didn't last any longer than a week or else our bill would have been higher. We keep the heater on the entire time because we're home most of the time. One more thing - be nice to your mom. I never understood why she worried so much and complained so much about the bills until I had bills of my own. Trust me, it's no joke.

We just moved from a 100 year old 2 story house. We could have expected a $300 gas bill and a $50 electric bill. We are now in a 45 year old ranch and have $400 electric bills. OUCH! My mom comes here and freaks out about how warm we keep it and how we need to shut off a sun room that we heat but I guess I am just spoiled. They always burned wood and I froze my rear off so I like my nice warm house as an adult, but they are my bills now!!

I have a 1100 sq ft apartment and mine was $51 this last bill that I just got last week, and no, we are not on one of those plans where we share with the other apartments and they break it by apartment. I just turn off all my lights, and I usually turn off my AC while i'm gone, or keep it low since i'm not at home during the day to save on costs.

About 170 in the winter and roughly 60 in the summer. Only two in the household.

I'm in Kansas, have a 3 bedroom, 3yr. old singlewide mobile w/ ch/ca. My elec. this month was $79.00, gas was $115.00. But it got pretty cold towards the end of the month. From some of the other answers, it sounds like I'm getting off easy. Wish it felt like it though.
