There are touchscreen monitors avaiklable, but they are fairly expensive.
These monitors have two thin layers of material enveloping a dielectric fliud, like a jelly paste. When you touch a part of the screen, you are causing the two skins to contact each other, and the monitor recognizes the co-ordinates of the contact point by calculating the capacitance parameters ( thats complicated, so don't bother to understand it ).
Anyway, the circuitry of the monitor knows which part of the screen you have touched, and relates it to the image it is displaying. It then behaves similar to a mouse where the software knows where the cursor is at the time of clicking the mouse button.
I suspect that touchscreen monitors will get less expensive over time.z

No. A regular monitor is just an output device. Youd need a new monitor that is set up to take input as well. Thatd be like...changing your tv into a touch screen by putting in a "special" dvd. Its impossible.

*snicker snicker* I mean oh ah sorry nope.
My question to you is how do you think your computer screen is going to know where your finger is? Is it telepathic? To have a touch screen you need to have a physical piece that is able to detect where you finger is.
