Though the 'X' rating is indeed a legitimate if seldom used rating, the 'XX' and 'XXX' are not. They are instead a marketing ploy created back when an X rating was the ultimate in taboo...at least as far as the rating system was concerned. A few smart 'Adult film' producers latched onto the age old idea that 'more is better' and if one 'X' was bad then 3 would certainly draw the crowds, those looking for the real deal.

Now you have to realize that this was an era where the 'Adult' industry was just getting started, taking over where previously Stag films, poor quality, low/no budget film reels that were often less 'Hardcore' than even your usual rated 'R' sex scene of today. At this juncture in history an 'X' rating signified a film that was far to controversial due to it's content, in fact the film classic "Midnight Cowboy' was originally released with an 'X' rating though this was latter dropped to an 'R'....amazing what winning an Academy Award can do isn't it?

And that leads us to the present. Yes, the 'X' rating still exists though today it makes more sense and draws a far greater audience to bypass the ratings officials all togeather and release films as 'Unrated', this working well in initial draw at the theater and an even greater return on the back end with DVD sales. Let's face it, we'll all take an 'Unrated' flick over it's rated 'R' counterpart anyday, even if that ploy is used just to slip in an extra Curse word or two.

So there you have it, a brief history on politics and marketing in the film industry and to think, all you really wanted was to find out what flick offered the biggest 'Bang' for your buck on a Saturday night. Hope that cleared things up for you, take care and have a great weekend.
