Right now the bast card out there is the new Nvidia 8800GTX if you have $500+..(big budget)..it's the only one that supports the new Direct X10 (DX10) drivers Microsoft released with Vista....all other cards only support DX9
which will make the next gen of games with unbelievable graphics and blow away..PS3 and all the console games..
But best mid-range (gaming) card i would say is the ATI X1950 Pro, ($200) just picked one up and BF2 and BF2142 run better then ever..no lag at all...great for HD Movies too.

First answerer is right, except with "ATI focuses more on quality, NVidia on performance". Seriously, I don't know where these brand stereotypes come from.
Second answerer is right too.
The two competitors' cards are matched up pretty well price-for-price. ATI's X1000 series has better texture filtering quality and better video decoding than NVidia's 7-series, but NVidia's 7-series has better widescreen support. ATI's cards are faster in DirectX and NVidia's cards are faster in OpenGL.
The only exception is at the top end where NVidia's new gen GeForce 8 series is unopposed, and ATI's cards won't launch until May.
Check out some articles on http://www.tomshardware.com/graphics/ for recommendations on which cards to buy.

For the last 4 or 5 years, ATI has owned the performance video card market, for the most part. But, they're late with their last card release, so for the past few months, nVidia has by far the fastest card. Not that it's going to make much difference to you, though. Any $80-100 card that will fit your computer should do what you describe, and probably better than you'd expect.

Its hard to answer cuz there is almost no difference between the cards of nvidia and ati at the same price segment, there is only slim differences that dont make the card really much better. Anyways ati is focusing more on quality and nvidia on performance.

the style speaks for itself. 7050 to 8600? thats way too far. a 7300gt is 3times below the 8600gt. so think of how effective the 8600gt is. attempt puuting video games on medium or hgh settings. the 8600 can cope with that... i cnt have faith that an 8600 does not carry out nicely. thats impossble. What "high quality" are you conversing approximately? is it the vista interface? or video games? if vista pc, then it would basically advance slightly.. in video games, huge distinction.. and that cant play hd movies and bluray stuff. the 8600gt can play it easily... or maybe you dnt have drivers, that should nonetheless overtake your equipped in graphcs.. further information: photographs card have the two a 6pin or 8 pin.. 4pins are molex and used for cd drives.. 8600gt doesnt choose a capacity connector. the 8600GTS does.. yet not the 8600gt.. so what 4pin capacity are you conversing approximately?

Its strictly a matter of preference and how much you want to spend. Do your own research. Toms Hardware is a good choice http://www.tomshardware.com/graphics/index.html
