I Run windows xp pro on a 40Gb hard drive while I have 4Gb Hard Drive I use for storage (Pictures, Videos, Websites I make, Etc...NO GAMES OR SOFTWARE). Now one minute it will work fine then the next minute it wont detect it...the icon wont appear in "My Computer" I restart the computer and it will detect it again, and sometimes I will have to restart the computer several times to get it to detect again. The 40Gb's Jumper is set to master, and the 4Gb's jumpter is set to slave. The cable isnt bad, I have tried diffrent ones and still works the same. The powersupply is fine because I hear the drive running when turn it on. Seems like though time this problem gets worse. I spent 30 mins last night to get it to detect it and I finnaly got it detected...I got all my stuff onto my 40 gig just incase this 4 gig is going band.

Im wondering if this hard drive is going bad...could this possible? If not is there anything that could be causing this to mess up and how can I fix it.

It doesn't sound like a virus or anything of that nature. I think you're on the right train of thought in thinking the drive is going bad.

To answer your question is this possible...YES! Hard drives go south all the time and usually do not exhibit any warning signs like yours is doing. Always make backups of your data. Something doesn't have to happen to the drive to make it break. They often break without any physical trauma whatsoever.

For backing up data and extra storage, I use a Maxtor OneTouch drive. They are capacious and fairly cheap. The drives are also bundled with backup software and are external, meaning they can be taken with you in the event of a fire or hurricane.

I hope this helps; its something to think about.

defrag when you use a hd to add and take off a lot of things your disc will become fragmented this can cause many strange things to happen.also if you don't have updated anti-virus get it now,and don't use every last meg on your disc it needs a little free space to operate if you overload it it will get corrupted...MUCH pain in the ***!!so defrag this is LAW for the downloader!!also get a file recovery software there are many freeware apps that really work well or contact me and ill send you one.this you install on a separate disc or usb drive so if disaster strikes you can get your stuff back.you are using a 4 gig backup this must be very old,you can get hd in the 100 gig size really cheap usually for less than a 40 will cost so you will have to eventually get a new one keep your eye out for sales many times you can get them for 50 cents a gig if you watch for a deal.

Considering all of the things you've already done, sounds like it might be going bad. Double check to make sure there's no lose connection somewhere, could be something really minor.
