Yahoo news did a story a few weeks ago that advised putting the sponge in the microwave. The next day they posted an addition that mentioned you should WET THE SPONGE FIRST. Apparently lots of people started fires in their microwaves. Microwaving the WET sponge is suppose to kill 97% of the bacterial.

Would depend on what kind of sponge I suppose. I wouldn't want to take the chance of the sponge clogging the drain. We use the SOS sponges. They are pretty durable. Im pretty sure you could put them in the dishwasher. My best advice tho, replace any sponge after 3 months.

What about boiling the sponges? That would seem like it would be less of a threat to at least your dishwasher.

Actually it is recommended that you put them in a dishwasher at least every other day to remove germs & organisms that live on them. The steamy hot water helps to kill the bacteria. So that when you clean with the sponge you are not just pushing the germs around. I saw this on the Oprah Show & on The View.

Sorry but I am going completely against popular opinion here. Yes you can put sponges in the dishwasher. Top rack only and only if they are still in good condition. A good sponge will last two to three months but just think of all of the germs it will collect in the meantime? YUCK!

absolutely. i do it all of the time!! i put mine in the dishwasher to clean it, then i put it in the microwave for 2 mins. to sterilize (while it's still wet). same with the brush i use to clean dishes. i do have to replace the sponges every 3-4 weeks though. they break down after a few weeks.

you shouldn't put them in the dishwasher... sponges are full of bacteria as it is and i don't think it's a good idea to put them in with dishes that you are going to be eating off of... sponges are cheap and are available at the local dollar store so instead of bothering with trying to clean them and possibly contaminating the rest of dishes... i would just consider buying a new one :) problem solved... and they may fall apart in the dishwasher and clog it up... not a good idea...

The best way to clean sponges is to put them in a bowl of hot water with a little dishWASHER detergent (it has bleach in it) and rinse.

I wouldn't. They could disentegrate and clog your dishwasher drain. They are cheap enough to just replace. Sponges harbor tons of bacteria -- I would only use them a couple of times and then toss them.

To disinfect a sponge, put the sponge (make sure it is wet) in the microwave for 1 minute. Walla, sponge cleaned, owner happy! : )

I wouldn't do that what if it fell down and came to rest on the heating element in the bottom of the machine. When the drying cycle comes on you could be in for a big catastrophe.
