For one thing, the story of how David came to be is quite interesting. There was an old marble column lying in an alley for about 100 years and they held a contest to determine what artist would get to carve it. The stone was rotting out on one side, so that part was unusable. Michelangelo won the contest, and sculpted David. David's body is leaning in a strange way because Michelangelo had to design David around the crumbling, rotten place in the marble.
It's interesting that sculptors were not respected as artist's back in Michelangelo's time, perhaps because of the intense labor involved and that it is dirty work. Painters were considered true artists. Michelangelo was paid only 600 Florens to sculpt David; at the same time a painter was paid 3000 Florens to paint a painting. It was discovered later that the canvas for that painting was improperly prepared and the paint literally slid off of it.
Madderthanthehatter is wrong. Michelangelo invented muscles in his sculptures to suit his artistic tastes.

I have been twice to Florence to see the magnificent statue. It is about 7 feet tall and so perfectly done. Not only the body, every part, but the expression on David's face, the torque of every muscle matching the determined look on his face. you really can't compare it to any other statue. i have seen many.
Frederick Remington that did western bronzes had a wounded cowboy for example. the horse of the rider acually had a pained and concerned look on it's face as welll as the muscle torques. That is why Remington is famous as well.
The Statue of David is a very visually and mentally complete work of art. They match each other. Pictures in a book do not compare to it's magnifigance.
also, Michaelangelo also said that his creations were alive inside the marble, he simply let it out to be seen.

The Statue showed the human body as it really is. David anatomy is correct (I'm not just talking about a certain area), but all his muscles, sinews, tendons etc. are exactly as Grey's Anatomy would put them and they were all in correct proportion to each other.

since most art historians are homosexual, the lower half of the sculpture is especially appealing to art historians.
