The ONLY way to hide your address is to use an anonymous proxy.

Neither is "safer"

there are softwares to protect ur privacy and hide ur IP from unwanted people I recommend, Hide IP (shareware).

It let's you surf anonymously without other software.

If you have defender, then turn on your firewall. Control Panel, Security, then Firewall. XP is vunarable, the updates are suppose to prevent this.
