I have an older computer and I want to add more memory. Is there a standard chip that is compatible with most computers or is there a specific one for my computer?

It does depend a bit - an odler computer might be 3 years old or 5 years old, - or older.
there are not THAT many different types, but there are a few. If you mention the make/model of the PC (if a brand name) it would help us give you a good answer.
alternatively, get whoever is going to add the memory towhip the lid off and have a look at the type of memory already fitted.
Chances are it will be a SIMM or a DIMM - if you look at the bottom, there may be TWO notches or ONE notch.
If you have 1 notch, you want DDR ram usually - ebay for DDR ram and away you go. if there are 2 notches, you almost certainly want SDRAM - again ebay is likely to help.
Check to see how many slots you have spare (or you can replace smaller memory with higher capacity ones) - eg: replacing 2 x 128K with 2 x 512 K
If you have the make OR motherboard manual, try and find out what the maximum amount is, some older computers will not look at more than around 512MB - and adding more will not help.
Most Pc's however will take at least 1 GB if they are no older than about 4 years.

There are different types of memory "chips" for computers. Im not sure what you mean about "old computer". If its indee an old computer, you might just consider getting a new system. A memory chip will cost you between 60- over 200. You can probably get a brand new computer for an addtional $100-300.
If you give us the make and model we can probably tell you what you need.

RAM is hopefully what you are trying to add. Notebooks use diffrent stuff, but they are pretty common. 133 is what I have in mine.
It is also something you can do yourself easily. You can go on line, use google, and type in your computer info, and it should tell you the RAM. You can order it, or there may be a computer store near by. To remove it, and replace it, well turn off the power, take out the battery, turn it over, and the small plate, usually one screw, open that, and you will see 1 or 2 chips. Held in by two little clips, be gentle, the RAM will pop up once you get the clips open. Then slide them out, notice which was they face. Put in the new ones, put the battery back in, turn over, and turn it on, the computer will notice the new Ram, and tell you to restart.

*NO* especially with older computers you need to know several things. Memory speed, pin type, memory type (ddr vs ddr2), maximum ammount your motherboard supports.
Its most likely ddr if its an old computer. You can look this stuff up on the website for the manufacturer of your motherboard or by calling the people you bought it from and asking them or going to their website.

all computers have a specific type. since it is older it will probably be DDR. there are also different types of DDR. you will have to check your system to find what speed. (PC2700 aka 333) that is what most older dells will use. depending on how much you wish to add it will be about 40-65 for 512MB or 35ish for 256MB. Newegg.com has the best prices but bestbuy works too.

the best way to find out what kind of memory if you don't know the particulars of your PC is to go to crucial.com they are a memory company there you can run a scan of your PC it will tell you what you need.this scan is safe for your machine and is free!!of course they will show you their product that will run your stuff,but you are under no obligation to buy from them and they wont send you a bunch of spam.another place you can do the same thing and get a good deal on memory is at tiger direct.com

There are several different types of memory. You need to know either what type of memory is currently installed or the motherboard model in order to determine what kind you need.
