hello all
My Rascal is a 22 week old hamster. He has lived with me for one week yesterday, however, he does let me pet him now and then but he does not let me pick him up yet, he is afraid of me and I am afraid of him bitting me, I stick my hand in there to see if he will get into it but he shys away everytime. He has hissed at me once and I was able to touch him for a little bit. How do I get him to let me pick him up. I want to be able to play with him....please help

If you are afraid of the hamster it will be afraid of you. It will que off of your emotions and feelings. Put your hand in there and gently pick it up. If it bites you then just stop. Do not jerk your hand away. This is not a normal reaction and something you have to train yourself to do. But if you do this you will get hurt less and the hamster (any animal really) will learn that you are not afraid of it. Then once you get him. hold him for a short time, making the experience a pleasent one. Stay in a quiet area and offer a treat. After you put him back in the cage offer another treat. Soon even he will learn that your hand is related to yummy (treat) happy times.

Rascal is just as nervous of you as you are of him. If you've only had him for a week, it might take a little more time for you 2 to get used to each other. I always say animals can smell fear on you, so try not to be afraid. Try to just keep putting your hand in the cage to get him used to you. try holding some snack that he would like to get him to eat from you. Just keep trying and don't give up on him.

Some hamsters are very timid, you will have to go slow and easy, alittle everyday and he should start to get used to you.
You might have to spend at least a half hour every day just trying to pat in while he is in the cage and work slowly at letting him come to you. Like all animals each one is different. patience and luck.

I think you should go easy with Rascal.He will get use to you soon. Talk baby talk to him so he will get familiar with your voice and then try just petting him first. I love those little guys!

it's just a hamster, man. pick it up wether it wants you too or not! the more you handle it the less nervous it;ll be. when it knows you are not going to hurt it, it will be your friend.

Back off... it is too soon and you don't want him to not like you.. if you keep pestering him that is what will happen..
