Turn the supply off, there is usually a quarter turn valve near the fireplace, turn this off and the pilot will go off.Whatever you do, don't blow it out, this could cause a safety hazard on old burners.
A note of caution, if you turn the supply off for the whole house, nothing gas will work, such as water heaters, stoves etc.

The pilot light is controlled by a small box that is called the gas control box. This device controls the flow of gas and has a shut off on it. If need be, use a flashlight to look at the knob on the valve. It can be turned to the "OFF" position.
In addition to the gas control valve, there should also be a shut off valve that can be turned perpendicular to the gas line, shutting of the flow of the gas.

If this is been out of provider it likely has air contained in the line, Open the gas line and the area the position it says to depress the pilot button for a minute, try this for a couple of minutes then try igniting it. no matter if that is an issue previous that do not attempt to fix it except you sense cormfortable with that style of work.

turn the gas supply off. For my gas fireplace, it has a dedicated shut off value in the basement.
