You shall hear many a different answer for this question. Personaly I perfer ZoneAlarm. Others will suggest kerio personal firewall but I suggest against it because it will alert you to every little detail and after a while you will get tired and start allowing everything.

Zone Alarm is a wonderful software program. However, I would also recommend a good router firewall for your network too. In the past, software firewalls caused computers to slow down; however, with today's super fast computers with RAM that is measured in Gigabytes rather than old Megabytes, who cares! Computers have come such a long way now that I would say that it is beneficial to have both a Network hardware firewall and individual software firewall on every computer in a network like yours! Depending on your financial situation, there are some very powerful hardware firewalls now for networks- like Cisco (expensive) and the Alpha Shield (rated very well for small networks like yours- with a one million dollar prize for any hacker who can crack through it the last I heard)! Furthermore, you should also get a good anti-spyware program (like Spysweeper), a good anti-virus program (like Bit Defender), and an anti spam software program (like the built in MS Outlook or stand alone Trend Micro or McAfee). Unfortunately, there are multi-security packages through all these companies, but if you want top security, you should do some research and learn to customize various products together and you will have to make sure that they are all compatible with each other- more work but the extra security may be worth it if that's what you need. Furthermore, you should also consider purchasing utility programs too- like System Mechanic, Norton Utilities, and advanced system Optimizer. Although computers have advanced a long way, the software and maintenance for them has become more complicated and necessary too. You should also make sure you update all your Windows software for the latest drivers and patches too- hackers can easily find loopholes if you fail to do this and break into your system.

Zone Alarm and it will notify you if someone is trying to gain entry, and asks you if a program is trying to send info out as well.
