ok so my Q is do you have to but the dogs to sleep and if so how and if not do they just sleep themselves

When you turn the ds off it is assumed they are asleep. You can't actually make them sleep.

just save the game and turn the console of and vollah they are sleeping.

You can, however, put them to sleep by crushing your cartridge.
