Soot on the bottom of an iron skillet can be removed using a little bit of cooking oil, it may work on your soot also.

i use a metal polish called flitz to get the soot off of the ends of my exhausts, but i guess any fine polishing compound would also work. jestersdomain.com

Dawn dish soap. If you have soot on your pipes you probably need to adjust your carburetors. Could be running too rich.

If its on the outside you have an exhaust leak, either gasket (at cylinder head) or pipe seal. Fix it first, then clean it up. try WD40 first then get more aggressive with chrome cleaners
