You could do it but that is pretty ruthless and what if you need your family's support? Would it be possible to enter a business that would complement rather than compete. For example if he ran an auto repair shop you could run a detailing shop. This way you could both increase business with referrals to the others store.

I think family members make better partners than competitors. but if you are both honest and ready for the challenge Have Fun !
I also have heard Family and Business don't mix. You might want to atleast think about it which it seems you are.
Good Luck with all your endeavours .

Move out of his market place. I know a builder who decided after yeas in the family business, he could not do it. He wanted to go on his own. He could have stayed and competed but out of respect for his father, he moved and started anew.
Good Luck

If you have a good relationship with him, it might be a good thing. I
believe friendly competition would help you both to try a little harder.

Depends how well you get along with them...... if you're on good terms, you're probably better off "tag teaming" and going into business together.............. if you hate them with a passion you cannot imagine, and got the commitment to go into business for yourself..... then go for it and go all out to bury them into the dirt.
