1. Johan Santana...dont need any explaination, most dominant pitcher in the game right now
2. Chris Carpenter...Top 3 in wins and ERA each of the last 3 seasons, enough said!
3. Roy Oswalt...Posted 5 ERAs of 3.01 or less since 2001 (Santana is a distant second with 3 such seasons in the same time span)..and has a 20-2 record in his last 22 September starts, money pitcher during money time!
4. Roy Halladay...3.20 ERA average since 2001 and won 16 games last year in spite of 6 blown saves, not to mention his Cy youngs.
5. Brandon Webb/ carlos Zambrano...splitting hairs when looking over each of these guys records and stats. Zambrano led NL in wins last year (16, first time any pitcher on a 90 loss team EVER won that many and a sub 3.60 era 4 years running in a bandbox stadium). Webb tied the 16 wins on an 86 loss team and had a 3.10 era in spite of being left in 3 games where he gave up 7 or more runs (take away those 3 games and era is 2.54).
There are guys that may come knocking at the door of this list in the future but numbers dont lie....these guys have PROVEN their ability to get the job done over a long stretch! Each of these guys have won lots of ballgames and posted top era and whip numbers over the last 5 years.

From a GM point of view
Santana
Zito
Hamels
Willis
Olsen
Go ahead, I'll throw 5 lefties at ya'. They are at a premium and I could trade them to get any 6 pitchers I wanted. Imagine if you got Francis,Bedard or Duke on top of this? Think the phone might ring? Just being creative. All pretty young too. Who would want Clemens for his last year? You'd make a great GM. I think Hamels is the next Santana. I'd like to reserve judgement on Dice K too.
