Walking is best, but if you've always been a swimmer, played tennis, or done some other physical, non-contact activity, your doctor will tell you that since your body is already used to it you should be able to continue normal activity... in moderation. Stay well-hydrated (60+ oz of water a day) and don't overdo it.

In the first trimester of pregnancy, you're really not that limited because your center of balance hasn't really changed. Ride a bike, take a walk, go swimming, go canoeing, go hiking. I would stick with pretty much cardiovascular exercises as these will keep you toned and help you burn calories. Just take it a little easier than you normally would.

Walking, swimming and yoga are all excellent exercises. They work out your entire body with little strain or risk of injury.
