Competition is one (but should not be the only one) motivation to make things better. For the people it is important that the companies compete for the customers. And for the companies it is important that the people compete for jobs. Because most of them (companies, people) are unfortunately lazy and selfish in essence and competition forces them to offer more. But it is never good to take it too seriously...

I have to agree that competion is important. We all compete in some way whether it is in a race or for a job promotion.

The production of the best. The above answer shows complete ignorance of human evolved behavior. The two sides of the same coin are competition and cooperation. They are not dichotomous.

Personally I have never seen the importance in competition...

I loathe it and the kinds of people who find it useful and something everyone should participate in.

As far as Im concerned. If you need to gage your ability and self worth on the ability or self worth of anyone else... You are an idiot and should run around in circles for an hour...
