the only US dollar coins avail in 1996 were the silver dollar and the susan b anthony

I don't think there was a one-dollar coin issued in 1996. The US Mint released some one-dollar coins from 1979 to1981 with Susan B. Anthony's face on them. When vending machines began giving out more change in dollar coins, the Susan B. dollar was issued one more time in 1999 before being replaced by the Sacajawea "golden" dollar in 2000.
