Misty....It sound like you have a vent problem. When you flush or drain liquid into a closed space, the pipeing, you are putting a positive pressure on the pipe if the vent is plugged and that positive pressure is great enough to keep the water from flowing into the pipeing. If your husband is able to do this he can go to the roof and locate the sewer vent and take a garden hose with him then run water into the vent and you or someone else keep an eye on the drains and cammode in the house.to make sure it dosent back them up. If the vent being plugged is the problem you should hear a change in the sounds comming from the vent as it fills up and the weight of the water mayl force the pluggage out and clear the vent line but if the water starts backing up in the sinks etc then your problem is in your main sewer line and is most likely tree roots if you have them near your sewer lines because winter is the growing season for the root systems and is normaly the trime of year you will experience pluggage in the sewer trunk lines.....hope this helps

I agree with Brian, you have a significant mainline clog. It could be from roots in the main, to a collapsed line. Your best bet is to call a professional plumber. Not only does he have a sewer machine, and he knows how to properly use it, but he will clean the whole line out, and not just break through the clog partially, only to stop up again in a few days. If you have a clean out pipe in the yard, remove the screw top. Look down inside, and if it is full of water, this verifies that the stoppage is farther downstream. If it is dry, then the stoppage is under the house. Either way call a pro!

Let me start with a question, are you on a septic tank, sounds like you have a pretty plugged up sewer line, time for rooter rooter or somebody with a knowledge of drains. From what you described, Draino is money out the window. Good luck

Tell your husband to grab you by your ankles and dip your head into the shitter, if your not going to carry semen into it then make yourself useful.
