First, choose a genre you're interested in (i.e sports, family, children, politics, addiction, education etc.)

Once you have chosen a genre, you can formulate a specific topic that is of interest to you (e.g: The Impact of Sports on Inter-city Youth, or, Parental involment and Academic Acheivement in Pre-Teens. )

You can always mix and match genres to make topics and subtopics. Just remember, choose a topic that actually interests you or doing the research will be a drag. Good Luck.
