Yes they can. In fact, used brick is quite expensive. There are companies that salvage the brick from old buildings in the eastern cities and it is available in most brickyards. There are problems with using old brick. Many of the old bricks are relatively soft and they tend to crumble prematurely in many exterior applications. This is especially prevalent when they are used in chimneys and on the corners of buildings. In an interior application, they tend to be dusty and dirty. I either case, the brick needs to be sealed after it is laid to prevent water penetration. This can change the look of the brick somewhat and some people do not like the "wet" look of the brick. In exterior applications, the brick needs to be resealed every few years to prevent its being damaged by the elements.
Good luck with your brick project.

Yes, you can used old bricks, they can be used in most landscape jobs. if you like the way they look or the rustic look of them. You can use them to make planters or you can use them as borders or ribbons in your driveway. There is a lot of manual labor involve when youare doing this. I hope this helps you a lot.

Yes, as a matter of fact some people go out of their way to find them because they give them the look they want. Any residue on them would have to be removed first, but there is no reason they wouldn't be useable unless you prefer the clean and new look.
