A woman has two X chromosomes (sex chromosomes). A man has an X and a Y. All of a woman's eggs will have one X chromosome. Half of a man's sperm will have one X chromosome, half will have one Y chromosome. It all comes down to which sperm gets to the egg first. There are some theories that earlier in the woman's "pregnancy window," the internal environment favors X-sperm, and later favors Y-sperm, but I don't know if there is any hard firm evidence of this.

I assume you mean why are some children male and some female?
The simple answer is that of the 46 chromosomes in each human cell a female has two x chromosomes and a male has only one x and one y.
some diseases are exceptions to this (girls with Turner syndrome have only one x and no y for example.)
A more detailed answer is that genes on the y chromosome turn on a cascade of chemical changes that lead to male development and testes.
Did you want more detail then that?

female eggs carry an x sex chromosome and male sperm are either x or y. If an x sperm joins the egg then you have an XX and a baby girl will result. If a Y sperm joins the egg, then you have an XY and a baby boy will result.
