An icecubes works in that it make the play doh hard and crumbly. Washing with hot water and soap works too, but I used to still have a little stain in the carpet, if it was red or blue. I eventually had the best results with a steaming machine. Not everyone has one of those. If you use the water and soap method, then give a little oxiclean paste a try or 409 works great too, but you want to check for colorfastness. 409 is my mother in laws wonder cleaner for her beige carpet.

Assuming it's dry....Play-doh gets soggy when soaked and should come up easily with Spot Shot and water.

hold an ice cube against it for a while then it's a lot easier to get out. the same goes for gum

use a sponge with water and soap and scrub.This happened on my carpet before!!! LOL!!!

put an ice cube on it, after it gets hard you can break it off
