No not really. I know first hand in neighborhoods that are poor, (ie..projects) the grocers buy the cheapest, most processed foods and charge more than suburban stores would for organic. Its because they know the people in the area don't have cars, and wont feasibly be able to go anywhere else. These stores are disgusting, pay a visit to one...rotten chemical worn produce....brownish meat...whats going on?? I gained 50 lbs in a year when I was poor, I ate maybe once every other day!
The media will take any perceived weakness and exploit it for money. People who are poor, fat, malnourished and miseducated are an easy target for those infomercials. They will tell people....you are sad...its because you are missing something...heres what you need to fix it ya fat slob....My friend wears a size 12, nothing too out of the ordinary having 4 kids, and her 5 year old watched this commercial and called her fat...
All I know is people better start caring about the quality of the food we eat or else we are going to be paying for it in our health insurance.

Well, I agree with your statement about the Middle Ages, plus that we need to improve health care in this country. I do not think that the rich ones are thin 'cause they can afford to eat well (meaning the poor ones are fat because they eat junk like hot dogs and mac'n cheese). I think a lot of the 'poor' ones are fat because they are not educated enough to eat well, or a lot of people work way too much to eat well...

I really don't think it is about rich or poor as much as it is about poor education. Rich and poor, parents are dumping sugar down their kids throats - alowing their children to dictate the menu and refusing to feed their children healthy vegetables and balanced meals. I am in no way rich but I have learned a lot about what certain foods do to your body. I spend my money on good foods, chicken, fish and beef, vegetables and good carbs. I don't buy candy, soft drinks, junk food, etc. We don't do fast food. To be honest, I rarely have money for anything extra.
I look around and most of my kid's friends are overweight, most of their parents are overweight and most of them have a lot more money than I do. I see the "rich" living th way they want and using liposuction, surgery, unhealthy pills to keep the slim look. .
When we are talking about organic foods, whole grains, etc- yes they can be a little more spendy than the junk foods but it is possible to find these things cheaper- it just takes a little extra effort- also- portion control is important- some who "cant afford" to buy healthier foods certainly have no problem spending just as much for three times the junk food! Supersize me!!

In the Middle Ages conditions were much different. There was disease everywhere and people died young. Cholesterol wasn't a problem because people just didn't live long enough to have excessive weight catch up to them in a noticeable way. Even if they died younger than they would have if they were skinny, poor people died so much sooner they never would have realised.

Haha...I believe the pressure of being thin is from media-hype and individual perspectives. However, the U.S. is not punishing "fat" people, nor do I believe the U.S. as a whole really cares about the health of fat people. We just frown upon it.
