Besides political problems, are there other hardships and problems that Singapore has dealt with since independence? Recent ones may include Sars outbreak, and Avian Flu. But can anyone tell me other problems that affected Singapore before the new millenium and after independence?

I think one of the worst problems facing Singapore in recent years was the opening of the first MacDonald´s restaurant ( can you really call it a restaurant ??? ) 17th of November 1979. I was there to see the cultural, not to mention gastronomic, carnage.
A disaster.
Worse than letting unaccompanied ladies into the Raffles.
